Mischaracterization in the CCCC fandom: a yapsesh (alternative title: Erm... What the Gore is Going On?)

Hi. Woaw. I'm actually making that post I talked about.

So. One thing I've noticed in the CCCC fandom is this weird fixation on gore, torture, violence, etc. Usually a level of graphic content that makes your average horror flick look... pretty tame!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy horror! I even think a horror story based around psychological conflict similar to CCCC could work well!

But is it just me, or has this fandom COMPLETELY lost track of what the characters are like in the source material?

Like. Let's be real. Nowhere in the album does Soul do gruesome surgeries on Mind, nowhere does Mind go ripping people to shreds like Doomguy, et cetera. The closest thing we have to an implication of violence is what most of us call the "Juno incident"- as even "tines stabbed through eyes" is clearly a metaphor with the next line: "that the sides have condemned."

Im gonna talk ab the characters themselves under the cut

I feel the biggest victim of this mischaracterization is Soul. In the album he's... kind of a victim, really. He toughs out being dismissed and fought over and pushed aside and outright dehumanized for so, so long. Are we seriously just... going to characterize him based solely on his lowest point in TSE? Spring and a Storm and Mucka Blucka are also songs where he's present- along with his presence in Just Apathy that the fandom seems to outright deny to keep their characterization of him as some violent, abusive monster. (Which, again, is quite literally never alluded to! He's honestly kind of a victim, if anything!)

Ohhkay. Next topic. Mind. Oh boy I have thoughts on how people characterize Mind.

He's not emotionless. If you believe this, you've fallen for his stoic facade. All of his songs are just. So full of so much rage. Maybe even a little bit of grief and sadness and fear, masked by said rage. He isn't some emotionless robot- (Heart calls him an automaton as an insult, but that's another rant.) and honestly it feels like such a disservice to such an interesting character with so much unexplored depth to portray him as such.

Heart. Oh boy. Where do I start. Heart what did they do to you.

Heart is the emotional side, yes, but that isn't just some... smol innocent uwu baby who cries all the time. Emotions aren't small and cute and timid. They're INTENSE and PASSIONATE and EXHAUSTING. Strong emotions leave you so, so drained, good OR bad. This is so much more interesting than portraying him as some "uwu hai dere!!" type of character. Which is nowhere in the album.

Whole is hardly even a character. Soul worshipping and praying to whole is fanon.

This fandom's weird obsession with creating shock gore and one-upping each other in a violence competition has spiraled pretty far out of control, and it's honestly crazy. How do you go from an album about internal conflict to violence that would make even the cast of Resident Evil cringe? Brah.

Final notes uhhh. Soul is a victim who got pushed to his limit, not an evil heartless abuser. Mind is angry and unstable and hurt, not some emotionless robot. Heart is the entire emotional spectrum, not some innocent baby. Ok i . I think that's all. Have a good one

ALSO: for more in depth stuff, go look at Genius I guess cause as much as d love too, I don't wanna spend all day here- ALSO ALSO: Go listen to the album! It's really good!

The songs referenced in this post are Chonny's {who I will refer to as CJ} covers of Miracle Musical's "The Mind Electric". The covers are from CJ's album, "Chonny's Charming Chaos Compendium" {I will refer to this as CCCC}, which consisted of "covers" of Tally Hall, Miracle Musical, Rob Cantor, and Joe Hawley songs. I quoted the word cover, because sometimes he writes entirely different lyrics. Now for the explanations.

Take a description of the characters I wrote a month ago! FYI: they're all parts of this guy called Whole {he represents CJ!}

Heart is one third of the whole, and is seen as the “emotional one” by Mind. He is also the one seen in more control of Whole in the beginning of the album. His voice in the album is represented by having no effects added, along with being softer. He has a mutual hatred to Mind. He is blind, and therefore also wears a blindfold. It is not specified when he was blinded, and is up to individual interpretation, though seemingly the most popular one being after the “Juno incident”, which I will cover later. Fun fact, HE HAS A GUN?! He represents the Moon, and has a mostly purplescheme. HMS each has a monochrome color that represents them, Heart’s being white. He has also been referred as “Resident Heart”, “The emotional side”, “Juno”, and “Artemis”. He has purple lipstick.

Mind is the second third we talk about, and is the “cold, logical” one, and finds Heart useless due to his emotions. After “The Ruler of Everything”, he is seen to have more control of Whole. His voice is the most distinct, which, THANK GOD- and is deeper and more monotone. Due to “The Ruler of Everything”, and Heart’s last lines in “The Heart Acoustic”, a majority of the fandom sees Mind as an android/ automaton. He has a blue color scheme. He represents the sun and the color black. He’s referred as “Mr. Mind”, “Automaton freak”, and “Apollo”. He has blue lipstick.

Soul is the final third. He is the peacekeeper, working to bring together Heart and Mind, and is determined to do so, saying he’d die trying. His voice is slightly distorted, and I don’t really know how to explain it. He is the one most representing Whole, and is seen in mostly two ways by the fandom, “Mom and Dad are fighting again”, and, “The children are fighting again.”. He has a glowing red trident, matching his red color scheme. In fanon, and sort of canon, Soul has a chicken named Darrel, created by Socialc1imb due to Mucka Blucka (Intro to Cacophony) having chicken noises, and was canonized in the music video for “The Bidding” by OpalTheThing. Confirmed by Chonny, Soul does drink Monster Energy {I think that's true, probably???}. He really wants Whole back and hates the constant fighting. He represents the color gray and the stars {some people see it as something else though}. He’s referred as “The host”, “a madman”, “insane”, “peacekeeper”, and “Atlas”. He has red lipstick. 

Finally, Whole. Also known as Harmonia {though some people see them as separate entities} , he is what happens when HMS goes into concord. Not much to say here. Again, he’s also a representation of Mr. Jash himself!!! {EDIT START} Oh wait also here's a quote from Mr. Jash's QnA mostly for me to save but uhm. How are Soul’s, Whole’s and Heart’s vocals distinct from each other? How did you decide on these differences? Why did you make Mind’s voice so distinct from the others? The main difference between Soul and Heart is the type and intensity of their pitch-correction. Heart is made to sound like a normal take, using pitch-correction only to fine-tune the notes that they sing to sit better in the music, while Soul’s is heavily cranked to sound almost robotic, even though each is in the same register. For some songs, Soul’s vocals also get layered on top of a Vocoder that’s programmed to replicate the melody of the song (noticeable in Two Wuv and Light.) The fact that Mind’s voice is so distinct isn’t really a specific choice I made, just that out of the three characters, he seemed to best suit it. Finally, from a sound/mixing/production point of view, the voice of ‘Whole’ as you all seem to refer to me is almost identical to Heart’s. This isn’t really for any thematic reasons, and instead just because it feels the most natural. {EDIT END}

Alright we aren't going to talk about Whole much by the way- So, The Heart Acoustic {I will refer to this as THA} is Heart singing a song from Apathy {I'm pretty sure Apathy is a hole}. He is in Apathy, from what the fans dub, "The Juno Incident", an event where Heart attempted to shoot Mind, but missed. He got sent to Apathy as a punishment. It's what I like to call, Heart going on a rant. Importantly, at the end of the song, Heart says this, "Do what you want, you automaton freak, no I can no longer bring myself to care, this hollowed out vessel's beginning to creak, so take control, let's see how you fare." Automaton freak refers to Mind and vessel refers to Whole, by the way. This is Heart's way of saying, "I give up." The Mind Electric, {TME} Is what I like to call, Mind's third and final "diss track" to Heart {The "diss tracks" in question being songs, "Be Born", "Storm and a Spring", and "The Mind Electric"}. Most of the song consists of him mocking Heart, here's a quote I like, "See how his feet miss the ground, and he falls inside a hole he dug for me.", This refers to Heart being in Apathy, a hole he dug for Mind as his grave for after the Juno incident. The Soul Eclectic {TSE}, A.K.A. my favourite song {yes, I'm biased cause Soul is my favourite but also this song goes HARD} Also, this song is real hard to sum up. So, the first verse is Soul kind of introducing himself. The second has Heart calling Soul a "Damn madman", and Mind calling Soul a "Depressed fool". This could also be taken as Heart and Mind talking about each other though. The last line in this verse Soul says "You seem to forget to you answer to me." This is Soul trying to claim any power he can, and he is telling the truth, Heart and Mind *do* have to answer to him. Third verse, Soul says "Neither is wrong, yet neither is right", referring to Mind and Heart's fighting. At the end, Heart and Mind share a line saying, "Condemn him to the infirmary", which I see as them trying to get Soul out of their fighting. The bridge Soul says, "You must be so arrogant to think That either of you can control The Soul so wholly, when To be one whole you can't hold solely" This is Soul talking to Heart and Mind, saying you can't control me, and you shouldn't think as such. Also, I took the usage of "Wholly" and "solely" as puns for Whole and Soul. Starting in verse 4, Heart and Mind finally start listening to Soul. In verse 5, Soul is pretty much like "I'm done with y'all's bullshit." The second bridge isn't notable, but in the interlude, Heart, Mind, and Soul all say, "I. Am. Me." {I'm only writing that because in the sound it sounds cool as fuck lmao} In the chorus, Soul says: "See how the brain plays around And it splits what once was whole down into three And you fall inside a hole, inside a- Someone help me Understand what's going on behind my eyes Doctor, I can't tell if I'm not me" The brain refers to Mind, and splitting refers to how they're all parts of Whole. The hole, again, refers to Apathy. The last three lines are Soul saying he doesn't exactly know what's happening between the three of them, even as their "host". In the second part of the chorus, Heart and Mind are fighting. Again. Shocker. In the third bridge, Soul again talks about their fighting, saying this: "See how they fight all day The other half won't hear what's had to say It's just the game they play here in this labyrinth maze" Yes, the last lyric is a reference to Labyrinth by Miracle Musical. In the outro, Soul is now fed up, and starts to threaten them. Here's the lyrics: "Screams with no sense for why One more day and more night One more black and one more white One more chance is all you've left to turn the tides Tridential regicide I won't hesitate to kill my Heart and Mind I will abdicate these deviants sat inside I'll take you down in tandem when this rope is tied"

Day / night, black / white refer to Heart and Mind's corresponding things. Soul then says he's giving them one more chance. In the last three lines, Soul threatens them, saying he'd rather die than do this. And I'm pretty sure the rope refers to a noose, which.., y'know.

i'll go first(kinda lengthy so its under a readmore)^-^

I had a whole miracle musical/tally hall phase in the summer of 2022, was obsessed with The Mind Electric, and i made a yt playlist w like 50+ versions. fastforward a year later, in the middle of 2023, i found a crazy 12 minute cover by this weirdo named Chonny Jash(what kinda name was that??) and gave it a try and holy shit my mind was blown, the three songs were easily the best covers i'd ever heard and i fucking loved them so much

at first i was just a fan of those three songs, but slowly thru the end of last year but surely i started listening to his other covers, like Hidden in the Sand, Variations on a Cloud, Ruler of Everything, The Bidding, and The Whole World and You, in that order(they all have a soft spot in my heart cus of it). I realized thru The Bidding that the songs were actually all connected so on the last day of 2023 i gave the whole album a try and fucking loved it, both song and lore-wise and from then on I was a huge fan. i've since listened to a lot more of his music tho not everything yet

it's kinda crazy that I've only been super into it not even for that long, but my journey def started like almost a year ago now lmao. you could say i fell very slowly into a hole i couldn't s

hi! ive listened to some of chonny jash's songs but did not realize that there was really a story? Or i vaguely knew but didn't have the time/energy to get into it and with the release of the bidding animation ive realized theres like a bajillion awesome animations and art and i want to get into cccc but have no clue how. also why does soul have a trident.

OH man!

The story of CCCC has an overall seeming narrative, but much of it's smaller points are interpretive due to Jash himself leaving it up to fans of the album. But! Overall it kind of goes like:

-Jash or, what most people call Whole, splits as due to mental dissonance and waning mental health. (Time Machine Reprise).

- Whole fades into Soul (End of TMR into Dream) and from there its Mucka Blucka as a sort of introductory song. The recap for a story you have or haven't heard yet.

- (The entire album is a time loop! Which is a big metaphor for the cycles of mental health and illness people go through.)

- From there its the section called "Cacophony" which starts off with Soul, but eventually it turns to Heart and Mind + their fighting and inability to see or listen to one another or their points of view. Of course, as Logic and Emotion, they both have valid ideas or opinions, but believe themselves so contradictory that the other must be evil or out to get them.

- Heart attempts to shoot Mind, as referred to in Ruler of Everything. Literal or Metaphorical as you take this, it is seemingly symbolic for an attempt at one's own life if not self sabotage. If not then both.

- The rest up until Soul Eclectic is sort of just the Mind and Heart fighting and their own personal views each on the situation.

- Soul in The Soul Eclectic reaches his breaking point. Threatening to kill them all (A more direct attempt at suicide)

- Mind and Heart in the subsequent songs decide to get their shit together.

- (Two Wuv) Soul realizes that not only can they be happier now but that trying to force themselves to conform to society's ideas of mental health or belief or love is just plainly unbeneficial. Sort of a song about unapologetically being yourself.

- Welcome To Tally Hall is a tribute to Tally Hall themselves more than anything.

- This transfers into Concord soon after! Concord is Whole or Jash by himself, though many of the songs seem to carry themes from Cacophony in them. Self sabotage, disagreement, importance placed on the wrong thing, the idea that no one person is better off than another. It concludes with Taken for a Ride. Which is also sort of CJ's epic "im burnt out as hell" song towards the end. But exaggerated to my knowledge for lyrical shenanigans.

That is CCCC as neutrally told as best as possible. I highly recommend forming your own ideas on it, but I'd be happy to also discuss more in depth my opinion on each song should you or anyone else express interest!

Getting into the Trident: The fandom took the metaphor of "Tridential Sovreignty" and "This trident he formed (found? Lyrics.) is both weapon and motive" and said "Soul's got a trident" to which Jash responded with "Absolutely yes he does now" Same with the crown most people put Mind in, and that is referenced in the "Trident, Crown and Blindfold" line.

Soul really did get noose imagery, a trident and a mask. All Heart n Mind got were a blindfold and crown. Lmao

Though Heart is also commonly drawn with wings. Which is semi-canonical according to album covers. I choose to ignore them because I don't particularly have an attachment to the idea!

Getting into the fandom itself, I can recommend looking around for the Chonny Jash Fan Server (CJFS) Discord link. But it can be extremely intimidating and even I just stick to discussion and one other thread channel. (Sides from my au channels which pop up every once a month or so).

Important note is that only Tally Hall covers have to do with HMS. Any of Jash's other music (of which I highly recommend, always) is unrelated. There is also a fan QnA somewhere that was done like a year ago now which has some neat answers in it.

I, again, am happy to go into my interpretations of HMS and the music as a whole but skdmsm saved you the reading hopefully should that be undesired!

Hi Cass! I could give you some entry level info sure! :)

CCCC is an acronym for Chonny's Charming Chaos Compendium, which is an album by Chonny Jash (yes you're reading that right).

The album is made up of rewritten and recontextualized versions of songs by a currently "on hiatus" band called Tally Hall, along with the band members' own side projects/personal projects, such as Joe Hawley's group Miracle Musical.

I'll try not to give away too much, but the story is about a person referred to as The Whole, who metaphorically splits into 3 different individuals, the purple and blind Heart, the blue and logical Mind, and the red and powerful Soul. Soul, Heart, and Mind (ESPECIALLY Heart and Mind) have got to figure out how to make things work between each other so that Whole can remain...well, Whole!

I do suggest giving the album a listen (if you wanna watch the music videos that go with songs, use this playlist!), and if you want/need to, use excellent artist @/cinnamonsly's annotations of the album! It's an excellent and easy to understand analysis of the album!! :)

There's also W3tBl@nk3t's awesome in-depth song-by-song analysis of the album! You can't really go wrong since they're both really great analyses!!

Oh, and speaking of artists like @/cinnamonsly, if you take a look at the "#cccc" tag on Tumblr, you'll find some awesome art of the characters! The characters technically don't have set in stone appearances so you can imagine em however you want!

OKAY so, if you're looking for the cccc (Heart, mind, and soul) storyline, ya gotta go to cccc. Shockingly, i know. Its full name is Chonnys Charming Chaos Compendium. It's a 'cover' of Tally Halls, Martins Marvel Mechanical Museum.

You can actually listen to the songs in order, they're pretty chronological!!! I'd recommend listening to them all, if you've got time ofc. If you don't, start off with The Heart Acoustic, then The Mind Electric, then The Soul Eclectic.

But it's pretty important you listen to the whole album eventually

You might not understand it. I sure as hell didn't. Side note, heart=moon, mind= sun. Buuut, after you've listened, and if you like the songs, then I can show you a video analysis on the album. It explains the story and some of the symbolism, and definitely helped clear things up for me!! It's right here, if ya need it.

Those are all the hms songs (for now.) !! But he has other albums, too.

Most notably, Gothic Whore, or the Novel Lyric Hunt. It's a whole bunch of songs about various gothic stories, including but not limited to, Carmilla, Dracula, Adam (frankensteins monster) and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I don't actually have that much for this album, other than, it's very nice! Very cool.

The lyrics are pretty easy to interpret, especially if you know the stories. If not, there's always the genius lyrics annotations lmao. No joke that's how I did it.

Ofc, you don't have to read into the lyrics or anything, but if you wanna have all the subtext for the fandom, it sure fucking helps. I also find it pretty fun.

You can ignore all this and do as you please!!! Just have fun, his music is fucking great

ohmygodohmygod breaking the gimmick for a moment just so i can spew about this . okay hold tight tons of text under cut

i think whole as a concept is so so interesting. when i first got into cccc i never even considered whole as a character; there was the persistent idea of whole, but i only ever saw his thirds, not himself - if there is a self to see at all.

when i started engaging with the fandom, i never really saw a general consensus about who or what whole is. sometimes he was a person, other times he was a deity, and a few times he was simply a state or an idea. hell, i always saw different colours for him as well, from orange to pink to green. this divide always confused me and i never really knew how to view this potential character until i started thinking wayyyyy too hard about it as i always tend to do LOL

the definition of 'whole' would change depending on which piece you ask. i think hms' different views of whole would be yet another thing they'd constantly disagree on. the general agreement is that whole is something to work towards, but what does that really mean?

for heart, in my opinion, whole would be a state, the state where the three of them coexist and operate as if they were one being. they are whole, not a separate entity, and only they are capable of being whole. the state of 'whole' is warm and fuzzy and it feels like laying on a grassy field near the end of summer where the weather is the most comfortable and feeling all of the tension and pressure in your chest just leave - the pit gets filled, no longer do you feel hollow. whole is being able to sit next to mind and soul and not dread the conversation to come when the sky opens his mouth. hypothetically.

for mind, whole is just an idea. it's a goal to achieve. not necessarily the three of them, but what the three of them are supposed to be; functional, apt, all as one being. alive. because they aren't alive right now, not to mind, he wouldn't call this a life. whole is supposed to be their life. they're never gonna be able to meet that goal if they don't get their collective shit together though, and sometimes mind wonders if whole is just going to be an idea forever, not quite tangible, a goal just out of reach.

for soul, whole is a person. whole is who they're doing all of this for. whole is his motivation to keep going, because without them, whole would surely fall apart, and that is the opposite of what soul wants because then they'll all be doomed for sure. he's sure whole depends on him too, and views their 'relationship' as sort of symbiotic. and sometimes it's hard, because soul has never seen whole. who is he really fighting for? whose life is he carrying on his back like it's the entire world? what about heart and mind? the two often wonder if soul only tries to care for them because he cares about whole. it stings a little. safe to say they don't really like soul's interpretation.

but who or what is whole really? who knows! not hms! and at the rate they're going i doubt they ever will! whole will forever be a fun little enigma to me, and therefore he will always be an enigma to them.

How did you come up with your hms designs? Like, inspirations and stuff?

GAH, man mainly other people in the fandom at the time and then they slowly developed more and more?

Though the mind half/half face was a thing I had made all my own at the time irc. Nobody else had done that but I wanted a way to sorta show his "source" or "brain" without it being a literal crown. Esp because Heart's design had his Heart and Blindfold, Soul had his Star and Trident so.. ykno! Even if I don't use the crown on mind much at all, still felt fair.

In general ik I wanted the half mind thing to be a design from the start. As my opinions changed n' such on hms, I realized that heart could have the half-half as well! Which is mostly how I've drawn him for a bit? But if I do go back to my CCCC pieces, He'll be that old same design. So would Soul.

I still like drawing Soul with a face, but I've also moved his star from his sorta chest/ lower rib area to his eye, since "Eyes are the gateway to the soul" and all!

And the mask is mostly to showcase how much of a shell or husk Soul really is..

So honestly, other people's designs in a general sense, and then also a lot of symbolism plus their canonical clothing !

I have fun making alternate designs and I've often used multiple at multiple times? Also shape language. Mind is a square, Heart a circle and Soul a triangle. Those are and were BIg in making them.
